MWB Royal C. Scofield

Grand Master of Masons in Ohio 1974

The Royal Scofield Society

The Royal Scofield Society is the premier Masonic Educational Society for the Grand Lodge of Ohio. Membership is earned by completing a robust and unique program intended to inspire and challenge those interested in Masonic Education. The curriculum is challenging but not impossible, focusing on connection and personal growth instead of research and isolation. It aims not to create sages in ivory towers, but rather servant leaders in Masonic Education. To honor those who have completed this rigorous curriculum, the Royal Scofield Society was established in the form of Resolution 19 by a vote of the delegates at the Annual Communication of The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio in 2019 in Marietta.

The Seal of the Royal Scofield Society bears the likeness of Most Worshipful Brother Royal C. Scofield, who served on the Education Committee from 1963-2005 including 20 years as chairman. He established the Grand Lodge of Ohio as a leader in Masonic Education, a distinction it still enjoys today. The Lamp illuminating the Volume of Sacred Law represents the quest for knowledge and connections; the colors of royal and silver represent the Blue Lodge, and the shield represents our duty to protect Freemasonry from ignorance and isolation. MWB Scofield’s theme as Grand Master was “Freemasonry by Example,” which adorns the shield as the Latin command ‘Aedificate Exemplo,’ or ‘Build the Example.’ This reminds us to live our Masonic Values and put them into action each and every day!
